Free Blu-ray Player Software for Mac and Windows

Is there real free Blu-ray Player software in the market now? The answer is, of course, NO. Any company who want to develop legitimate Blu-ray software must be authorized by the Blu-ray Association and pay a fee for the authorization. So there is no completely free Blu-ray software in its true sense allowed in the market.

Fortunately, there is still some free software for Blu-ray which can meet some of your requirements. Below I will introduce of them.

1. VLC Media Player
VLC is widely used cross-platform media player software. It can support almost any types of media formats available now. The latest 2.0+ version was reported supporting the Blu-ray movies and you should add extra libraries to make this feature work. This may be a complicated process for the common users. What’s more, the exposed AACS/BD+ libraries can only support limited old Blu-ray discs. But it works with the unprotected Blu-ray discs very well.

2. Free Mac Blu-ray Player
This tool is from CNET.com, you can search it to get under the Mac-download category. The tool is very simple and can help you play Blu-ray disc on Mac OS X with the help of Blu-ray drive. It is not very mature now as it can only play the main movie of a Blu-ray now and not all the Blu-ray discs can be decoded.

3. Free Blu-ray Copy
The copied Blu-ray disc movies can be playback with VLC media Player. For this, Aurora free Blu-ray Copy may be very helpful. Although it can only backup Blu-ray disc as ISO image files, Aurora Blu-ray Copy is very helpful if you have Daemon tools installed on your computer. This will not be problem for Windows 8 platform as it can mount image files directly.

4. Free Blu-ray to MKV Ripper.

This tool recommended is famous for its brand name MakeMKV. It can rip Blu-ray or DVD disc movie into MKV with keeping the quality as well as multiple audio tracks and subtitles. The DVD ripping function is completely free, while the Blu-ray ripping feature is only free during its beta period(often 30 days). After that period, you have to pay for the Blu-ray function.
